Amateurs Take Large First Round Lead

After the first round of the SCGA-SCPGA Palmetto Cup Matches, the Amateurs hold an 8-1 point lead over the Professionals.  Playing a Four Ball format, the amateurs jumped to a quick lead in most of their matches finishing the majority of them before reaching the 18th hole.  The team of Kim Cauthen & Greg Beavan were able to hold off the brother team of Robert & David Dargan for the lone victory of the day for the Professionals.  The final round will start at 8.30 a.m. on Monday and will be played in a modified alternate shot format.

The annual battle between the state's top amateur golfers and the top SC PGA Chapter Pros, the Palmetto Cup Matches are in their 30th year of existence. The 2011 event is being contested at the recently renovated Florence Country Club. To date there have been 29 Palmetto Cup Matches - In 2010 the SCGA victory proved to be the seventh straight for the amateurs and gave the amateurs a 14-13-1 edge in the series.  In 1997, the tournament was cancelled due to inclement weather.
