Rickman and Varn fend off competitors for victory
On the
final day of the 19th Annual Senior Four Ball Championship, the team
of Bob Rickman (N.Augusta) and Bob Varn (Orangeburg) held on to their lead to
win the championship by one stroke. After an opening round seven under 65, the
duo finished with a two under round of 70 for a two day total of nine under par
135. Their steady play on Wednesday included four birdies and two bogeys.
The team of Gene Spencer (Blythewood) and Mike Weiner (Kiawah Island) were eyeing the championship themselves after an opening round 67. Spencer and Weiner were in the final pairing with Rickman and Varn and throughout the day kept challenging for the lead but fell just short having just two birdies on the back nine. Another notable team that made a charge from the field was Walter Odiorne (Columbia) and Bernie Shealy (Columbia). The team of Odiorne and Shealy posted a low round of 66 after shooting a 32 on the front with 6 birdies and finishing with a 34 back nine to get within one stroke of the victors.
The 2012 SCGA Senior Four Ball Championship was played over one golf course, the par 72 – 6,479 yard Callawassie Island Club course in Okatie, S.C. The field consisted of 60 two-man teams that will be split into three flights for the final round. Each team will be playing a four ball format each tournament day. The Senior Four Ball Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.
