Pope and Ramey Capture Senior Better Ball Title

Heading into the final round of the 47th Annual SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship, first round leaders Tim Pope (Spartanburg) and Doug Ramey (Greer) controlled a one-shot lead but needed to provide a flawless final round if they wanted to claim the title. After an even par 36 front nine by Pope and Ramey, the duo caught lightning in a bottle on the back nine by compiling five birdies, three pars, and a lone bogey on the 18th hole for a final round score of 68 and tournament total of 10 under par 134 to capture the 2020 Senior Better Ball Championship by one stroke over Walter Todd (Laurens) and T.D. Todd (Laurens). Finishing alone in third place was the team of Eddie Hargett (Blythewood) and Brad Krapfel (Columbia) with a tournament total of 136.

In the First Flight, Thomas Eberhard (Johns Island) and Ed Galbavy (Mount Pleasant) claimed top honors after a final round 68 and a two-day total of 140. In the Second Flight, Ray Arrants (Bethune) and Perrin Babb (Bishopville) made a big jump to the top of the flight following up their first round 76 with a final round of five under par 67. In the Third Flight, David Spearman (Florence) and Steve Matthews (Florence) were victorious with a final round 69 and tournament total of 147.

The 2020 SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship was played at the par 72 – 6,369 yard Santee Cooper Country Club. The field consisted of 48 two-man teams playing Best Ball format conducted over thirty-six holes. The Senior Better Ball Championship is in its 47th year of existence.

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina. As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf. Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 59 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events. Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, Golf Genius Tournament Management Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame. The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
