Hannon - Stringer Win Senior Four-Ball Championship

The team of Vic Hannon (Camden) and Bob Stringer (Blythewood) captured the 2006 Senior Four Ball Championship after a thrilling battle with first round leaders Tommy Ford and Charlie Swanson, Sr., both from Mount Pleasant. The Hannon - Stringer pairing fired a final round five under par 66 to give them a two day total of eleven under par 131. That final score was just one shot better than the Ford – Swanson team, as well as the team of Jim Barnette (Anderson) and Joe Vignati (Bluffton). Ford and Swanson shot a final round three under par 68 to finish at ten under 132 for the championship, while Barnette and Vignati shot four under par 67 to also finish at ten under par.

Playing better ball format, Hannon and Stringer teamed for six birdies en route to victory. The most crucial came at the eighteenth hole, with both teams in the final pairing tied at ten under par, and the Barnette – Vignati team in the clubhouse at ten under par. After watching the Swanson – Ford team knock both approaches on the green for makeable birdie putts, Bob Stringer came through with a masterful shot that ended up inches from the hole. His tap in birdie sealed the deal as both Swanson’s and Ford’s birdie tries rimmed out. The two man team, who had won two previous Senior Four Ball Championships, was gracious in victory after a back and forth battle with their playing competitors.

The 2006 SCGA Senior Four Ball Championship was played on the par 71, University Club at Cobblestone Park in Blythewood, S.C. The field consisted of 64 two-man teams playing Best Ball format conducted over thirty six holes. The Senior Four Ball Championship is one of 17 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.
