Liebler Surges to Lead After Second Round at Senior Championship
Steve Liebler (Irmo) has his eyes set on adding another South Carolina Golf Association victory to his resume, as a conservative second round score of even par 72 has catapulted him into the lead with a two day total of three under par 141 heading into the final round of the 62nd SCGA Senior Championship that is being held at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, SC.
Liebler began his day two shots back of first round leader, Eddie Hargett (Blythewood), but producing what would seem to be a noneventful second round score of even par, which consisted of just one birdie, one bogey, and 16 pars has given Liebler a three stroke lead heading into the final round over two of South Carolina’s best senior golfers. Tied for second with tournament totals of even par 144 is Hargett, who finished with a faulty second round score of 77, along with two-time SCGA Senior Champion, Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill), who was the only player in the field to have a second round score under par at one under par 71. The 2017 SCGA Senior Champion, Geno Berchiatti (Greenville), rounds out the top four with a two-day total of one over par 145 and stands just four shots behind Liebler.
The field has been cut to the low 45 and ties after 36 holes for the final round of the championship. Forty-five players have made the cut at 15 over par or better.
The Final round of the Championship will begin at 8:30 a.m. off the #1 tee at The Carolina Country Club.
