Gray Looks to Repeat at Amateur Championship
With a weather forecast of any golfer’s dream, the third day of the 89th SCGA Amateur Championship at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, SC, made for a perfect entrance into the weekend. Starting the day, less than half of the field would tidy up their second round, some clutching on to any hope to make the cut, as a strong finish would give themselves two more days to compete. Once all scorecards were collected, 63 players would be awarded the opportunity to continue on at a chance for the title as round three got underway late-morning
Familiar names would stay at the top of the leaderboard and almost provide a déjà vu moment as the 88th SCGA Amateur Champion Tyler Gray of Lugoff would again land himself in the final pairing along with Evans Lewis (Sumter) who took the lead after round two was complete. The day would quickly unfold as Sumter's Christian Salzer took the lead heading into the back nine. Salzer's lead would swiftly change with Gray, a rising Junior at Coastal Carolina University, carding an eagle on the par-5 15th to skirt ahead of Salzer and hold on to a one shot lead heading into the final round of the championship.
Salzer, just one shot back after posting a -3 under (69), will join Gray in the final pairing as well as 2018 SCGA Mid-Am Champion Kyle Bearden (Barnwell) who sits three shots back after firing a -4 under par (68). First round leader Jonathan Griz of Hilton Head Island will round out the foursome, remaining in contention after posting a -4 under par (68) to also put himself just three shots back of the leader.
The final round of the 89th SCGA Amateur Championship at Columbia Country Club will begin at 7:30am with all players teeing off of number one tee.
