Two Tied Atop the Leaderboard at Super Senior Championship

Blue skies and a slight breeze greeted players for the opening round of the 13^th Annual Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Florence Country Club in Florence, SC. Tim Pope (Spartanburg) and John Long (Murrells Inlet) are tied atop the leaderboard with both players posting two under par rounds of 70.

Pope has already earned one SCGA victory in 2019 at the Super Senior Four-Ball Championship, but is looking to add another individual event title to his resume. Pope stayed steady throughout his first round, compiling 13 pars, two bogies, and three birdies to consistently navigate his opening round on the pristine Florence Country Club layout. Long, also looking for his first SCGA Super Senior Championship victory, held on tight despite finishing his round with a double bogey, still managed to accumulate 10 pars, two bogies, and 5 birdies throughout his opening round. Two time SCGA Super Senior Champion, Joe Hackler (Myrtle Beach) is just one shot off of the lead after an opening round even par score of 71.

In the Legends Division, former Super Senior Champion, Mike Weiner of Kiawah Island leads with an opening round of one under par 70 and takes a one shot lead heading into the final round.

The Super Senior Championship consists of two divisions. The Championship division (Age 65-69) was split into three flights by first round scores: Wilson Flight (70-76), Second Flight (77-81), and Third Flight (82 & Over). The Legends Division (Age 70 & Over) was split into three flights by first round scores: Orr Flight (70-77) and Second Flight (78-81), and Third Flight (82 & Over). The Final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

The 2019 SCGA Super Senior Championship is being conducted on the par 71 Florence Country Club course in Florence, SC. The course is playing at 5,950 yards for the Championship Division and 5,478 yards for the Legends Division. The field consists of 98 individuals over the age of 65 years old playing a Stroke Play format conducted over thirty six holes. The event was created to honor the 41 years of service by Anderson’s Harry Wilson to the SCGA.
