2019 SCGA Amateur Championship – First Round Results & Second Round Update
Sowell Fires Low Round Before Weather Delay
Greer, S.C. – With the first round still needing to be completed, the second day of the 88th SCGA Amateur Championship at Thornblade Club would see the field wrapping up Friday morning. Mother Nature provided clear skies and bright sunshine for players to tidy up their remaining holes, regroup and hit the course again to begin round two.
Red numbers would take center stage again in the morning wave as College of Charleston rising senior Logan Sowell (Kershaw) followed a 5-under par 66 with a 3-under par 68 to climb to the top of the leaderboard. Sowell started on the back nine, going out in 1-over par 37 – but would hop aboard the birdie train and card four birdies for a 4-under par 31 on his final nine.
The afternoon wave would again experience a weather delay, forcing the completion of the second- round into the weekend. Competitors will finish 36-hole scoring tomorrow morning, with a shotgun start at 8am and upon completion of play, a cut will be made to determine the low 70 and ties who will contend on the weekend.
Those remaining on the course Friday evening with a shot a making a move and in contention to make the cut, include first round leader Jake Carter (Aiken) and Greenville’s Danny Brock both currently sitting at one off the pace, 7-under par for the tournament, upon others.
Round Two will resume at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning. The field will be cut to the low 70 and ties following the completion of the second round. Round Three is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 PM with a double tee start.
