Pope Takes First Round Lead

Warm temperatures, sunshine, and a slight breeze greeted players for the opening round of the 12^th Annual Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Florence Country Club in Florence, SC. Tim Pope of Spartanburg will take a one stroke lead heading into the final round.

Pope, recently crowned as the 2018 Senior Men’s Club Champion at Musgrove Mill Golf Club, began his day on the first hole at the pristine Florence Country Club layout. After a bogey on the 2^nd hole, Pope followed with a birdie on the 3^rd hole along with six straight pars to complete his front nine with an even par score of 35. Pope continued his trek to the back nine making pars on holes 10 through 12 before allowing one stroke slip away with a bogey on the par 4 – 13^th hole. After pars on holes 14 through 16, Pope negated the prior bogey with a birdie on the par 4 – 17^th hole along adding a chip in eagle on the Par 5 – 18^th hole to complete his round with a 2 under par round of 69. Frank Ford of Charleston is one shot behind Pope after an opening round score of 70.

In the Legends Division, former Super Senior Champion, Carey Hite of Columbia leads with an opening round of three under par 68 and takes a three shot lead heading into the final round.

The Super Senior Championship consists of two divisions. The Championship division (Age 65-69) was split into three flights by first round scores: First Flight (69-76), Second Flight (77-80), and Third Flight (81-89). The Legends Division (Age 70 & Over) was split into three flights by first round scores: First Flight (68-76) and Second Flight (77-82), and Third Flight (84-94). The Final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

The 2018 SCGA Super Senior Championship is being conducted on the par 71 Florence Country Club course in Florence, SC. The course is playing at 5,950 yards for the Championship Division and 5,478 yards for the Legends Division. The field consists of 95 individuals over the age of 65 years old playing a Stroke Play format conducted over thirty six holes. The event was created to honor the 41 years of service by Anderson’s Harry Wilson to the SCGA.

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina.  As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf.  Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 59 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events.  Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, Golf Genius Tournament Management Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame.  The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
