60th SCGA Junior Championship – Round Two Results
Dataw Island, S.C. - Ominous skies lingered over the lowcountry island course in round two, as Mother Nature threatened throughout the day. A pop up storm required an afternoon weather delay, leaving just enough time for competitors to complete their round. Players returned to the course after a one hour and thirteen minute delay to a cool breeze and fighting to save those last couple of shots as cut day came to an end.
Firing an opening round 4-under, 68 and following that with a 3-under, 69, Trey Crenshaw from Lancaster slid into the lead as the second round of the 60th SCGA Junior Championship Presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation came to an end. Crenshaw started the day with an opening drive that landed him in a divot, ultimately leading to a bogey start. With confidence and a calmness about him, Crenshaw expressed, "I told myself that was the only bogey I was going to make today and that was the only one I made." He would then card back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 to make the turn at one under par. Crenshaw would birdie the first hole and the last hole of his final nine to card a two-day total 137. Holding a the lead for the first time in a competitive tournament, Crenshaw will look to capitalize on his consistent and stellar play.
Right on his heels will be Connor Fahey of Greenville who will also be looking to secure his first win. Fahey posted the low round of the day, carding a five-under, 67 to surge into the solo second place spot. When asked about the turning point in his round, Fahey recalled a par save on the fifth hole, sinking a 30 footer, keeping him in contention and heading into the final round just one shot back. Fahey will be ready to play aggressive and make a run at the title.
In the Boys 13-14 Division, Pake June (Florence) and Walker Jennings (Sumter) are tied for the lead and three shots clear of their nearest competitor as the cut has been made with Wednesday's Final Round looming. June came out the gates ready to make a move in the second round as he made the turn at two under. A few early bogies and then a tap in birdie on the par-three 16th hole secured a smooth one-under par total. Jennings carded a similar round, but held it together on the back nine to jump back into contention. Three shots back and hoping to make a Final Round surge is Wayman Thomas of Mt. Pleasant. Thomas will look to capitalize on this his consistent play during the championship.
