Two Teams Tied Atop Leaderboard After Round One

Ideal conditions greeted the field for round one of the SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship held at Santee Cooper Country Club. Several teams took advantage of the beautiful weather to put themselves in contention for the championship. The teams of Joe Hendrick / Daran Womack and Mike Gravley / Tim Pope are in a share for the lead with four ball scores of seven under par 65. The leaders are just one shot ahead of Rick Cloninger / Kevin King and Tim Teaster / Sammy Truett, both of which recorded rounds of six under par 66. Two-time defending champions, Walter Todd and Eddie Hargett, are just two shots back at five under par, 67. The pair of Rich Houghton and Danny Stubbs round out the top six after shooting four under par 68.

The entire field will be split into three flights for Sunday’s final round based on today’s scores. Cooler, windier conditions are in the forecast for what’s shaping up to be yet another highly competitive championship. Final round play will begin on Sunday with a 10:00 am shotgun start.

The 2017 Senior Better Ball Championship is one of 21 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 44^th Annual event is being played on the 6,369 yard, par 72 golf course at Santee Cooper Country Club in Santee, SC. This year’s Championship had to be rescheduled due to the logistical concerns associated with evacuations caused by Hurricane Irma in September.
