Lathrop Takes Lead Role of South Carolina Golf Association
The South Carolina Golf Association Board of Directors is proud to announce Biff Lathrop as the new executive director of the SCGA, effective January 1, 2018. As a long-time employee of the SCGA, Lathrop will take the leading role of an association that has been providing competitions and services to member clubs in South Carolina since 1929, and looks to further develop and grow the organization into the modern era of the golf industry.
Lathrop brings with him more than 20 years of experience with the organization and expressed his excitement for the next step in his career. “I look forward to guiding the team with a focus on growing the game in our great state of South Carolina,” Lathrop commented.
The SCGA, the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina, consists of over 270 member clubs and more than 57,000 individual members. The association conducts over 20 statewide championships, 71 one-day contest, ten USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events, a full travel schedule will remain on Lathrop’s agenda as he becomes the face of the South Carolina Golf Association.
Lathrop will take the reins from long-standing figure in the golf industry, especially in South Carolina, Happ Lathrop. Happ has held the position of executive director for 40 years, creating numerous programs and enhancing amateur golf across the state. Happ will continue to remain active with the golf association as a senior advisor.
Speaking directly on his new role, Lathrop states “Having started with the Association licking envelopes at the age of six, I have grown up in the SCGA family and have seen all aspects of the organization. As Executive Director, I look forward to working with our great staff in providing and enhancing the services we offer to our members and member clubs.” With an association on the rise, Lathrop will look to further the mission of the SCGA in growing the game and initiatives throughout South Carolina.
Working in cohesion with the SCGA Board of Directors, staff and other partnering organizations will be key to the transition. SCGA President, Steve Fuller expressed his excitement for the future of the association stating, “We are very fortunate to engage an experienced and capable leader in Biff Lathrop to succeed our long-time executive director Happ Lathrop. Replacing is always challenging, but we are confident that Biff embodies the leadership qualities and expertise to lead our organization into a promising future.”
Lathrop received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina with a focus in Business and Sport Administration. Lathrop, along with wife Heather and two children Harrison and Carsyn, are eager for the transition and growing the game of golf in South Carolina.
