King Reigns at Mid-Amateur

Johns Island: Kieth Murphy, of Charleston, took a one shot lead into the final round of the SCGA's 17th Annual Mid-Amateur Championship. Murphy carded an outgoing 38 while Kevin King, playing in the same pairing, took the lead with a two-under-par 34. Bert Atkinson, the defending champion and in the last group, struggled with his game and left the title a two man race.

King, who won the event in 1988, increased his lead to three on the devilish tenth hole despite a bogey as Murphy could only manage double bogey. The pair played evenly until the 17th hole when Murphy capitalized on a King bogey with a birdie to close the gap to one stroke.

King's approach shot on the final hole missed the green left. Murphy fired his approach shot to within 15 feet for birdie and a chance to send the event into sudden death. But, the 41 year old King was not to be denied. He calmly pitched his 35 foot shot into the hole and claimed the title.
