Three Way Tie Atop SCGA Mid- Am Leaderboard
Despite Hurricane Matthew bearing down on the Midlands of South Carolina, the first round of the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was completed at the Country Club of Lexington with three players tied for the lead at five under par 67.
Straight out of the gate, Troy Miller of Charleston shot a front nine score of one under 35. Miller set the pace on his way to the top with four birdies on the back nine firing a 32. Miller was later joined by Columbia’s Jarrett Grimes who had a five hole stretch of birdies in the middle of his round to get to seven under by the 13th hole. However a couple of bogies coming in saw Grimes settle for his 67. Later in the afternoon, Chris Eassy of Greer kept any hiccups off of his card and posted three birdies on the front to go with two on the back and an overall score of 67 at five under.
There are 12 total players under par including Steve Liebler – 2006 and 2010 Champion – of Irmo who is one shot off the pace at four under 68. Marcus Grumbles, also a former Champion, of Greenville is three shots back of the leaders at two under 70 and a slew of players at one under par 71. Defending Champion, Todd Hendley of Greer shot a first round of total of four over par 76.
The Final round of the Championship will begin at 8.30 a.m. off of both #1 and #10 tees.
The 2016 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship is being conducted on the par 72 ~ 6,633 yard Country Club of Lexington course in Lexington, SC. Originally, the championship was slated to be a 54 hole contest. However, with the impending South Carolina landfall of Hurricane Matthew, the Saturday round has been cancelled and the final round will be played on Sunday. The Mid-Amateur is one of 21 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 35th year of existence.
