After Tropical Storm Hermine exits, Hendley / Mahoney enter with storm of their own

One day after Tropical Storm Hermine made its way through South Carolina, clear skies and eighty degree temperatures greeted the field of 48 teams at the 43rd annual SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship being held at Santee Cooper Country Club. Despite several inches of rain in addition to lots of fallen limbs, debris, and trees; the golf course held its own and was in great condition for Saturday’s first round. A number of teams took advantage of the playing conditions; in particular the tandem of Todd Hendley (Greer) and Mike Mahoney (Greeleyville), which shot a best ball score of eight under par 64 to grab the first round lead. Just one shot behind the leaders are Senior Better Ball defending champions, Eddie Hargett (Blythewood) and Walter Todd (Laurens), who shot 65. Two teams stand just two shots behind the leaders: Jim Burgess (Murrells Inlet) / Steve Horton (Moncks Corner), and Byron Beck (Marion) / Billy Hoylen (Florence), both of which shot 66. In total, six teams are within four shots of the leaders heading into what could be a low-scoring shootout in Sunday’s final round.

Special acknowledgment goes out to Superintendent Gene Scarborough and his crew for having the golf course ready for play after a very damaging storm.

The 2016 Senior Better Ball Championship is one of 21 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 43rd Annual event is being played on the 6,369 yard, par 72 golf course at Santee Cooper Country Club in Santee, SC.
