Young Charges to the Front of SC Amateur
Georgetown, SC – Breezy, warm and beautiful conditions greeted the field for the third round of the 85th South Carolina Amateur Championship at DeBordieu Club in Georgetown, SC. Carson Young (Pendleton), who was two shots behind second round leader Andrew Novak (Mt. Pleasant) heading into the day, posted a solid four under par score of 68 to take his own two shot lead heading into Sunday.
“I really didn’t make a lot of mistakes today,” commented Young. “Made a couple of 15 to 20 footers for birdie and didn’t make mistakes,” he added. On the other hand, the challenging par five finishing hole witnessed a Novak hiccup when he hit one into the water and three putted for a double bogey. That cut the tie between he and Young and left him two shots back heading into the final 18 holes. “He’s hit his irons incredibly well this week,” mentioned Young of Novak.
When asked about the possibility of claiming his second Billy Lewis Trophy, Young said, “I think the last amateur tournament I won was three years ago,” referring to the 2013 SCGA Amateur Championship.
Making a move was mid-amateur Robert Lutomski of Mauldin who was even heading into the weekend and posted a three under 69. Easley’s Matt Carter is also positioned at three under par going into Sunday.
The 2016 SCGA Amateur Championship is being played in Georgetown, S.C. over the par 72 – 7,012 yard layout of the DeBordieu Club designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. The field consisted of 126 players by the time the first round began that were either exempt or qualified at one of four sites. The Amateur Championship is one of 21 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 85th year of existence.
