Novak Takes Lead into Weekend at SCGA Amateur
Georgetown, SC – Mother Nature had other plans than allowing the second round of the 85th South Carolina Amateur Championship to conclude as scheduled at DeBordieu Club in Georgetown, SC. However, thanks to the tournament field for quick afternoon play, Mother Nature was foiled and 2014 SCGA Amateur Champion Andrew Novak took over the top spot.
Novak (Mt. Pleasant), the Wofford Terrier who will be a rising senior in the coming weeks, posted the round of the day, matching the opening round 67 by Bluffton’s Ben Dietrich. Novak started on the tenth tee and fired an opening nine of five under par 31. He finished his final nine, the front side, by posting a score of even par 36. “I hit it great, only missed a couple of greens,” Novak commented.
Novak was paired with 2013 champion Carson Young (Pendleton) and defending champion Keenan Huskey of Greenville. Young sits two shots back at five under par after playing well and finishing the second round with an effort of 69. Huskey didn’t fare as well but made the cut and will play into the weekend. When asked about the prospect of playing with Young for a third consecutive day, Novak commented that he enjoys “playing up to the competition.”
On the heels of one of the more efficient opening rounds in recent history, two weather delays totaling two hours and 50 minutes and more than a half an inch of rain made conditions tough. However, the course drained well enough to allow both the morning and afternoon waves to finish – albeit in the dark.
Other solid finishes included Weston Bell of Piedmont who also shot a round of five under par 67 and was leader in the clubhouse for a few minutes at four under par. Austin Frick of Myrtle Beach matched the total of Bell at four under 140 and sit tied for third, three strokes off the lead. Frick followed an opening round 71 with a three under performance of 69.
First round leader Ben Dietrich (Bluffton) posted a two over par round of 74 to finish at three under for the two rounds. A total of 72 players made the cut and will get to enjoy the hospitable DeBordieu Club golf course, staff and amenities.
The 2016 SCGA Amateur Championship is being played in Georgetown, S.C. over the par 72 – 7,012 yard layout of the DeBordieu Club designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. The field consisted of 126 players by the time the first round began that were either exempt or qualified at one of four sites. The Amateur Championship is one of 21 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 85th year of existence.
