2016 SCGA Junior Championship – First Round Results

Parrott Leads at SCGA Junior Championship

Hollywood, SC – Nearly three inches of rain fell in the 18 hours prior to the first tee time of the SCGA Junior Championship presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation.   However, Tropical Storm Colin couldn’t stop the field of 141 S.C. Junior Golfers and the tournament started on time thanks to a dedicated staff and a golf course that drained well, at the Links at Stono Ferry.

Jack Parrott, 2014 SCGA Junior Champion, leads after shooting a one-under par-71 in the soggy, first round conditions.  A slew of contenders sit one shot back at even par-72.  Parrott, a Columbia native, who became Junior Champion at Willow Creek Golf Club, then earned runner-up honors last year at Dunes Golf and Beach Club, looks to reclaim the title this year.

James May (Ninety Six), Tyler Gray (Lugoff), Dixon Flowers (Sumter) and Drayton Stewart (Charleston) of the boys 15-17 year old division, are all tied for second.  Nathan Frank (Roebuck) and Manning Sloop (Rock Hill) represented a strong showing of 13 to 14 year old juniors and also sit one shot back at even par.

Last year’s champion, Christian Salzer of Sumter, is six shots back after firing 77.

The low eight scores of the tournament automatically qualify for the 41st Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches.  They will be played July 22-23 at Idle Hour Golf & Country Club in Macon, Georgia. These coveted Matches are the longest running interstate matches in the country.  The top eight also qualify for the prestigious Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational and the Junior Heritage. The Champion receives an exemption into the SCGA Amateur and the Sage Valley Junior Invitational.
