Hendley Looks for Repeat

Orangeburg Country Club will be the host to 113 golfers competing for the 58th SCGA Senior Championship on May 10-12, 2016.

Defending Champion, Todd Hendley, is aiming to continue his winning ways in 2016.  Last year, the 57 year old Greer resident, partnered with Duff Wagner to win the SCGA Senior Four Ball, the Senior Championship at Bulls Bay and finished the year with a title in the Mid-Amateur Championship.  The Thornblade Club member will have a host of other players looking to grab the Bob Causey Trophy, including two time Champion and four time SCGA Senior Player of the Year, Rick Cloninger.

The field will include a total of ten fifty five year old “rookies” that will be looking to claim their first Senior Championship victory.  Topping that list of newly eligible players are Walter Todd and Eddie Hargett who have teamed to win both the SCGA Senior Four Ball and Better Ball Championships since reaching Senior status.  Geno Berchiatti qualified for the US Senior Amateur at Orangeburg last fall in his first senior event.

Former Champions that are competing and looking to get their hands back on the Championship trophy include Johnny Dennis, Mike Weiner, Bill Smunk and Andy Congdon.

The 2016 Senior Championship will be contested on the Ellis Maples designed Orangeburg Country Club.   Founded in 1922, the Club has a long and rich history of golf in South Carolina.  In 2009, the golf course, clubhouse, pool and tennis courts all received an extensive renovation.  Orangeburg CC has hosted countless Championships and USGA qualifiers over the years, but this will be the first SCGA Senior Championship conducted on the course.

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina.  As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf.  Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 71 one-day contests, ten USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events.  Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, a Tournament Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame.  The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
