55th Senior Championship
Congdon Holds on For Title
Playing in his first SCGA event and first Senior Championship, Andy Congdon shot his third consecutive score of 74 for a tournament total of 222 and one shot victory in the 2013 SCGA Senior Championship held at Spring Valley Country Club.
The 58 year old Murrells Inlet resident had to work hard to hold off a hard charging Mark Giles in order to claim the title. After starting strong playing the first eight holes at one under par, Congdon had his first slip of the day with a three putt bogey on the par-five 9th. Playing in the group ahead, Columbia’s Mark Giles finished the front nine at three under par and found himself only one shot back of the two day leader. After Congdon bogeyed holes 10 and 13 the tide had turned and Giles had the one shot lead. That’s when the eventual Senior Champion found some inspiration. Congdon’s wife and son had made a special trip to see him finish his round and he told himself that they wouldn’t see him hit a bad shot. From that point on, the Wachesaw Plantation Club member managed to par the last five holes while Giles slipped with three putt bogies on holes 17 and 18. The one shot difference proved to be enough for the proud husband and father to claim the Bob Causey Cup and the 55th SCGA Senior Championship.
Tying the low score of the tournament with a final round of 71 Mark Giles finished alone in second place, while third place was claimed by Charleston’s Andy Gianoukos with a score of 225. Kevin King came back from a broken ankle earlier in the year to finish alone at fourth and one half of the team from the Senior Four Ball Champions, Walter Odiorne, wrapped up the top five.
The 2013 SCGA Senior Championship was played at Spring Valley Country Club on the par 72 - 6,452 yard George Cobb/John B. LaFoy layout in Columbia, SC. The field consisted of 105 players over the age of 55 and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the first two days of play. The Senior Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 55th year of existence.
