Anderson & Smunk Win in Playoff
Mark Anderson and Bill Smunk needed three extra holes to defeat Chris Mitchell and Jarrett Grimes to claim the 17th Annual Partners Championship held at Spring Valley C.C. and the Members Course at Woodcreek Farms.
Anderson from Beaufort and Smunk from Kingstree started the day four shots out of the lead and in the First Flight of the Championship Division before shooting a final day low score of 64 to finish at fifteen under par 129. Anderson was the man with the hot hand during the round carding nine birdies of his own to lead his team to their strong finish. Smunk however made the birdie on the third playoff hole to clinch the victory.
Former Champions Jarrett Grimes and Chris Mitchell from Columbia finished two shots ahead of their nearest competitors in the Championship Flight with a final round of 68. In the Second Flight there was a three way tie for first at 137.
The Tournament Division was also decided by a playoff and was won by the father son team of Joe and Michael Hourihan. A par on the first playoff hole, #18, gave the Clover duo the title over Florence’s Grey Raines and Tom Kasler which finished in first place of the First Flight. Steven Threatt and Chris Johnson from Mt. Pleasant and Lancaster finished tied for first place with Easley’s Doug Edwards and Greg Horne in the Second Flight of the Tournament Division. .
The 2009 SCGA Partners Championship was played over two golf courses, the par 72 – 6,665 yard Spring Valley CC course in Columbia, S.C and the par 72- 6,686 yard Members Club at Woodcreek Farms course in Elgin. The field consisted of 93 two-man teams split into two different Divisions based on handicap, the Championship Division and the Tournament Division. Each division is playing a Captains Choice format the first day and a Best Ball format the second while alternating courses each day. The Partners Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association.
