Siefert Seizes SCGA Junior Title
Zack Siefert limped home with a final round 75, but somehow, held on to take the 2002 SCGA Junior Championship. In finishing the tournament at one over par 217, Siefert hung on for dear life as he posted four bogeys in his last five holes. Swirling winds played havoc with the rest of the field as none of the early contenders could mount a charge.
Phillip Mollica stumbled his way to second place overall and first in the 14-15 age division with a final round score of 76, four over par and a 220 total. Andor Pruitt started the final round a little too far back, but closed with a 2 under par score of 70 to finish in third overall and second in the 15-16 Division. Defending champion Joel McAlhaney posted a final round 75 to join him at five over par 221.
Austin Reeves of Greenville dominated the 12-13 year old bracket and finished at five over 221, eight shots better than his nearest competitor.
The 54 hole event was hosted by Columbia Country Club and supported by BB&T. The Junior Championship is one of 17 major events conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. Yardage for the 14-17 year olds was 6,676 and the 12-13 age bracket played the par 72 course at 5991 yards.
The top 8 players in the two older brackets will qualify for the 27th Annual Georgia - South Carolina Team Matches to be held at Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta this summer.
