Russell Glover to be Inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame

Columbia, SC – President of the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, Frank Ford III, is delighted to announce the induction of Russell Glover, a highly respected golfer and beloved figure in the golf community. Glover’s induction honors his outstanding achievements in junior, amateur, and professional golf, as well as his contributions to the sport as a dedicated professional and mentor. Glover will be the 79th member of the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame.

Russell Glover’s golf career began with a series of impressive junior competition victories. He won the 1959 and 1960 South Carolina Junior High School Championship and the 1960 and 1961 Charleston News & Courier Championship. He also claimed the 1961 and 1962 Southern Interscholastic Championship and the prestigious 1963 Donald Ross Junior Championship.

His success continued in amateur golf, where he placed second in the 1962 South Carolina Amateur Championship and won the 1966 University of Alabama Invitational. Glover also showcased his talent on the national stage by participating in the USGA Amateur Championship in 1962 and competing in the NCAA Championships in 1966 and 1967.

As a professional golfer, Glover’s achievements include winning the 1974 South Carolina Open Championship, 1976 Carolinas Open Championship, 1979 and 1981 Carolinas Pro-Pro Championship, 1985 and 1993 CGA Pro Amateur Championship, 1996 Carolinas PGA Senior Section Championship, and being named the 1996 Carolinas PGA Senior Player of the Year. Glover also played in numerous prestigious PGA tournaments, including the Heritage Classic, Greater Greensboro Open, and World Open.

In addition to his competitive success, Glover made significant contributions to golf as a professional. His career began as a pro shop assistant at Whispering Pines (1963-1967), followed by service in the US Army in Germany (1967-1969). He then held positions as head professional at Cheraw Country Club (1969-1971), assistant pro at Kings Grant Country Club (1971-1973), head professional at Lake City Country Club (1973-1995), and Crickentree Golf Club (1995-1997). Glover concluded his career at the Country Club of South Carolina (1997-2013).

Known for his character on and off the course, Glover also dedicated 44 years to teaching junior golf lessons for free, fostering a love for the sport in young golfers. Many of the juniors he mentored went on to have distinguished golf careers, just as he did.

The induction ceremony will celebrate Glover’s remarkable career and lasting impact on the golf community. He will be inducted into the SC Golf Hall of Fame on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the SCGA's 21st Annual Golf Day, where he will receive his custom white Hall of Fame coat, gifted by BP Skinner Clothiers in Columbia, South Carolina.
