Professionals Top Amateurs in Annual Palmetto Cup Matches

After a two-day grudge match full of camaraderie and stiff competition, the South Carolina PGA Professionals are victorious over the SCGA Amateurs with a 22.5 – 19.5 point victory in the 37^th Annual Palmetto Cup Matches played at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, SC.

On Sunday, the two-man teams from each association competed in a Captain’s Choice format. After the first day of competition the South Carolina PGA Professionals held a two-point lead securing 11.5 points while the SCGA Amateurs tallied 9.5 points. The format for the final day of competition was Four-Ball match play. The South Carolina PGA Professionals secured the cup by totaling 11 points on the day to the SCGA Amateurs 10. Three points were available in each match – one point for winning the front nine, one point for winning the back nine and one point for winning the overall match.

The 2021 Palmetto Cup Captains consisted of Charlie Rymer leading the SCGA amateur team while Gary Schaal led the South Carolina Professional team. 

The history of the Palmetto Cup Matches has the SCGA with 21 wins, the SCPGA has 15 wins, and one tie. One match was cancelled due to weather in 1997 along with the 2020 match being cancelled due to COVID-19.

The 2021 Palmetto Cup Matches were played at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, SC. The SCGA team was comprised of the top amateurs in the State while the SCPGA was made up of the top club professionals in South Carolina. Two-man teams played Captain’s Choice on Sunday and a Four-Ball Match play format on Monday. The Palmetto Cup Matches celebrated it's 37th year and eagerly look forward to the next match-up with our friends from the Carolinas PGA.
