The River Golf Club Wins Lathrop Cup Title

The River Golf Club team combined to shoot a total two over par 219 to win the 2020 edition of the SCGA’s Lathrop Cup. The River Golf Club was represented by professional Chris Verdery and amateurs Jeff Pope, Randy Lamb, and Jay Blackburn.  Columbia Country Club represented by professional Chris Sparrow with amateurs Eddie Hargett, Brad Krapfel, and Walter Odiorne finished in second place with a 219 total. 

In the Pro-Am portion of the event, Professional Jon Hines led his Thornblade Club team to victory with a final score of 13 under par 131.

The 2020 SCGA Lathrop Cup was played on the par 72 - 6,300 yard Links at Stoney Point course in Ninety Six, SC. The field consisted of 15 teams playing in both the Lathrop Cup and the Lathrop Cup Pro-Am. The Lathrop Cup is comprised of three amateurs over the age of 55 from the same club using the aggregate of their three scores to determine the Senior Club Championship of South Carolina.  The Pro-Am portion of the event uses the best two balls of the group, including the club professional.   The Lathrop Cup is named after long time SCGA Executive Director Happ Lathrop.

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina. As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf. Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 59 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events. Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, Golf Genius Tournament Management Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame. The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
