Liebler Holds Steady to Claim Senior Championship Victory
Steve Liebler of Irmo shot a final round score of one over par 73 to capture his first SCGA Senior Championship victory with a three-day total of two under par 214 at The Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, SC.
Liebler began his day with a three-shot lead over first round leader Eddie Hargett (Blythewood) and Rick Cloninger (Fort Mill) along with a four-shot lead over Geno Berchiatti (Greenville). The four would be paired together for the final round in what would be a powerhouse grouping that would eventually fall to a two-horse race between the ever steady Liebler and two-time SCGA Senior Champion Cloninger. Liebler opened his final round with a birdie on the first hole while Cloninger had a slight hiccup for bogey to extend the Liebler lead to five shots. After pars on the 2nd and 3rd holes, Liebler would bogey the 526 yard Par 5 – 4th Hole reducing his lead back to four. Cloninger would add birdies on the 5th and 7th holes to cut Liebler’s lead to two shots after the front nine as Liebler finished with an even par 36 to Cloninger’s one under par 35. Liebler continued to stay steady on the back nine by adding eight straight pars through the 17th hole. Despite a lone birdie by Cloninger on the 10th hole, Cloninger would add pars on holes eleven through sixteen before a costly bogey on the 17th hole. Liebler would take a two-shot lead into the 18th hole and despite a bogey, Liebler would finish with a tournament total of two under par 214 to add 62nd SCGA Senior Champion to his already impressive resume. Cloninger would finish alone in second with a tournament total of one under par 215.
Finishing in solo third place was Eddie Hargett, who finished with a three-day total of 220. Walter Todd (Laurens) finished in fourth place with a tournament total of 223.
