Crenshaw Clinches Junior Championship
Entering the day, Trey Crenshaw (Lancaster) had hopes of not recreating a scene from two years ago ultimately falling short after holding the second round lead at Dataw Island Club where the 60th Championship was hosted. That was not the story today as Crenshaw hoisted the Charles Rountree, Jr. trophy at the end of the day and became the 62nd SCGA Junior Champion Presented by the Heritage Classic Foundation at Tradition Golf Club.
Beginning the day just one shot back of the leaders, Crenshaw slowly made his way into contention and began a battle on the back nine with one of the second round leaders, Waymon Thomas (Mt. Pleasant).
The back nine is where Crenshaw would catch fire, carding three birdies in a row to slide into a tie for the lead with Thomas. Thomas stayed steady throughout his round, but a missed green on the par-four 16th hole left him with a five foot putt to save par. He would just miss the par save and unfortunately follow with another bogey on they 17th hole to finish the day one shot behind, capturing the solo runner-up position.
When asked about this win Crenshaw emotionally expressed, "This is one you want to check off the list and I've worked so hard and been so close over the past couple of years. It's pretty special and I'm going to enjoy not only the win but all the perks that come along with winning!"
Capturing the 2019 Boys 13-14 division title, Jerry Bruns of Beaufort rounded out the top-three for the championship posting a final round three-under par, 69. Bruns would make an early run on the front nine, but a late double on twelve sadly pulled him from a run at the title.
William Jennings of Greenville captured the Boys 13-14 division three shots over runner-up finisher Tip Price (Greenville). Starting the day it appeared he was going to be vying for the overall championship. Jennings got hot early with back-to-back birdies on holes three and four but a couple of errant tee shots and a double on the 8th hole would make it tough to catch up.
The top eight finishers qualified for the 45th Annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Team Matches. Those players include Champion, Trey Crenshaw, Waymon Thomas, Jerry Bruns, Luke Walmet (Mt. Pleasant), Griffin Tarver (Tega Cay), William Jennings, Eric Nord (Blythewood) and Jonathan Brennan (Taylors). The Matches will be played June 31-August 1 at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia!
A continued partnership with the South Carolina Golf Association, The Heritage Classic Foundation will again be the presenting sponsor of the Junior Championship, showcasing the best players across the state. A 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Heritage Classic Foundation is dedicated to supporting educational and charitable initiatives to enhance quality of life and economic vitality by hosting the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR golf tournament.
