Long Claims Title At Super Senior Championship

John Long captured the 13^th Annual Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Florence Country Club after a three-hole playoff battle between first round co-leader, Tim Pope of Spartanburg and Gus Sylvan (Columbia).

Met with rain showers and strong wind gusts for the final round, participants in the SCGA Super Senior Championship faced tough conditions throughout the day. Even though Long and Pope lead by one shot heading into the round, the field suddenly became even, as mother nature became a major factor. Long compiled 10 pars, 4 bogies, one double bogey, and added 3 birdies to finish his round with a final round score of 74 and tournament total of 144. Pope replicated Long’s round of 74 firing a three over par 38 on the front nine along with an even par back of 36. Gus Sylvan battled back from three shots down after the first round to ultimately plug himself into the playoff with a final round score of even par 71. After a three hole playoff to decide the champion, Gus Sylvan finished in third place, Tim Pope finished in second place, and John Long grabbed the victory on the third hole.

In the Legends Division, Willard Dorriety of Florence was victorious after finishing with a tournament total of 142 after a final round score of 1 under par 70.

The Super Senior Championship consists of two divisions. The Championship division (Age 65-69) was split into three flights by first round scores: Wilson First Flight (70-76), Second Flight (77-81), and Third Flight (82 & Over). The Legends Division (Age 70 & Over) was split into three flights by first round scores: Orr First Flight (70-77), Second Flight (78-81), and Third Flight (82 & Over).

The 2019 SCGA Super Senior Championship was conducted on the par 71 Florence Country Club course in Florence, SC. The course was played at 5,950 yards for the Championship Division and 5,478 yards for the Legends Division. The field consisted of 95 individuals over the age of 65 years old playing a Stroke Play format conducted over thirty six holes. The event was created to honor the 41 years of service by Anderson’s Harry Wilson to the SCGA.
