Lexington, S.C. - An unconventional way to begin a major championship, the first round of the Heritage Classic Foundation SCGA Junior Championship Presented by Capital City Lake Murray Country was canceled due to the amount of rain the Country Club of Lexington endured leading up to the tournament. It was decided the Charlie Rountree Jr. trophy would be awarded to the junior golfer that shot the lowest score over two rounds of competition and the event would not post a cut. With a field of 162 players, the first round of the Junior Championship got underway Tuesday as sunshine and blue skies cast down on the course. Competitors were anxious to compete, and the scores proved that as red numbers flooded the scoreboard.

Heading into the final round, two players have found themselves in a tie for the lead. Brandon Masters (Piedmont) came into the day wanting to get around the golf course and gain a feel for the layout as he was unable to play a practice round. With a hot putter, sinking 30-footers throughout the day, Masters was able to focus on reading the layout of the course and setting himself up for success heading into the final round. When asked about what he will take from his round today, Masters expressed, “Knowing how the greens received my shots today and more knowledge of the grain, I feel I’ll put myself in a good position for tomorrow.” Austin Scott of Daniel Island also carded a 5-under 67 in his opening round. Scott also credited his putter to his success today. Starting on the back-nine, Scott fired a 5-under 31 and eased into his final nine holes with three birdies to even out three bogies. Scott’s approach to the final round will be to make more putts and put together two solid nines, hoping that puts him in the winner’s circle.

Only one shot behind and coming off a recent victory will be Rock Hill’s Zachary Reuland. Reuland carded a 4-under, 68 to sit solo in third place and claim the last spot in the final pairing. With five birdies on his round, Reuland will look to thrive on that momentum going into the final round.

Beaufort’s Jerry Bruns sits atop the leaderboard in the Boys 13-14 division. With a round of even par, Bruns started the day with seven pars and two bogies but would bounce back on the back-nine with three birdies. Bruns will have heat on his heals in the final round, as Cameron Biddle of Aiken and Andrew Gregory of Inman take the final spots in the lead pairing.
