Ford Wins First Super Senior Championship

Frank Ford shot a final round score of 68 for a two day total of 138 to win the 12^th Annual Harry Wilson Super Senior Championship at Florence Country Club. Tim Pope of Spartanburg along with John Long of Murrells Inlet finished tied for second place each finishing with a respective tournament total of 142.

Starting the final round one stroke behind the first round leader, Ford needed to play mistake free golf in order to catapult him to the top of the leaderboard. Putting together a final round consisting of 15 pars, 3 birdies, and zero bogey’s all but sealed the title for Ford’s first SCGA Super Senior Championship victory. Defending Champion, Rick Cobb, finished tied for 11^th after a two day total of 153.

In the Legends Division, Dr. Carey Hite of Columbia was victorious after finishing with a tournament total of 138 after a final round score of 1 under par 70.

The Super Senior Championship consists of two divisions. The Championship division (Age 65-69) was split into three flights by first round scores: Wilson First Flight (69-76), Second Flight (77-80), and Third Flight (81-89). The Legends Division (Age 70 & Over) was split into three flights by first round scores: Orr First Flight (68-76), Second Flight (77-82), and Third Flight (84-94).

The 2018 SCGA Super Senior Championship was conducted on the par 71 Florence Country Club course in Florence, SC. The course was played at 5,950 yards for the Championship Division and 5,478 yards for the Legends Division. The field consisted of 95 individuals over the age of 65 years old playing a Stroke Play format conducted over thirty six holes. The event was created to honor the 41 years of service by Anderson’s Harry Wilson to the SCGA.

The SCGA, founded in 1929, is the governing body for amateur golf in South Carolina. As a non-profit organization, the SCGA’s purpose is to promote, preserve and serve the game of golf. Made up of more than 270 member clubs and more than 50,000 individual members, the SCGA annually conducts 21 SCGA statewide championships, 59 one-day contests, eight USGA qualifiers, seven 40-plus tournaments and six special events. Other Member services offered include GHIN – the USGA Handicap Computation System, Golf Genius Tournament Management Software System and support, Rules of Golf and Handicap education, USGA Course/Slope Ratings and Course measuring, Amateur Status information, the Palmetto Golfer Magazine and the SC Golf Hall of Fame. The SCGA also houses the offices of the SC Junior Golf Foundation and SC Junior Golf Association in a combined effort to support junior golf and grow the game’s initiatives.
