Meldrums Take Title for Fourth Time
For the fourth time in the last eight Championships, Chad and Kadi Meldrum are one again Champions in the SCGA/WSCGA Mixed Team Championship. The husband and wife team from Aiken combined for three birdies, three bogies and one double for a final round score of two over par 73 and a two day total of 143. Shawn and Lea Venable finished four shots behind with a total of 147.
In the Senior Division, Nick Avery and Julie Flynn (Goose Creek & Myrtle Beach) edged out Charlie and Niza Hall (Hilton Head) by one shot with a total score of 143. Avery and Flynn scrambled as a team to finish the day with a score of five over par 76 in the alternate shot format. This is the first SCGA Championship in the long playing career for Avery.
In other Flights, Nancy Dodge and Mike Ramsey took top honors in the Championship Second Flight. Joe & Betty Armbruster finished top in the Senior Second Flight with a score of 154, while Kirk and Sybil Davis won by five shots in the Senior Third Flight.
The 2017 WSCGA/SCGA Mixed Team Championship was played at Fripp Island’s Ocean Creek course. The field consisted of 60 man & woman teams playing a Best Ball format the first day and a Select Drive-Alternate Shot format the second day. The Mixed Team Championship is in its 19th year of existence and is one of 21 Major Championships conducted annually by the South Carolina Golf Association and one of two Championships conducted in unison with the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association.
