32nd Annual Mid-Amateur Championship
Lee Palms Surges To Victory
Lee Palms shot a final round of 66 to finish at nine under par 207 to claim a two shot victory in the SCGA's Mid-Amateur Championship at Oldfield Golf Club. John Patterson, the leader going into the day, finished at 209 in second place.
Palms, a former Mid-Amateur Champion in 2003 and Amateur Champion in 2008, says that he played the “best golf in my life” over the weekend to finish with rounds of 67-66. The Greenville native and member of Greenville Country Club made ten birdies, one eagle and only one bogey over his last 36 holes. The 44 year old Keenan Suggs agent started the day three shots behind and had the number of 207 as a goal when he started the day. After making a 45 putt on the last hole for birdie which he was only trying to two putt, Palms found himself at that magic number and a top of the leaderboard.
Finishing two shots back was second round leader John Patterson of Bluffton at 209. Former Mid-Amateur Champion Steve Liebler from Irmo finished in third at 210. Bluffton’s JD Hoft, current one half of the Mid-Amateur Four Ball Champions, finished alone in fourth at 211. Defending Champion Todd Hendley had to withdraw due to illness.
The 2013 SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship was conducted on the par 72 ~ 6,861 yard Oldfield Golf Club course in Okatie, SC. The field consisted of 117 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and was cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round. The Mid-Amateur is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 32nd year of existence.
