28th Annual Palmetto Cup Matches
When the SCGA amateur team began the first round matches in the annual Palmetto Cup competition, four rookies had won team spots. Good strong play from these rookies lead the amateurs to a 16 1/2 to 10 1/2 victor over the SCPGA professional team. Blair Scurlock, Kyle Milner, Marcos Grumbles and Rob Simmons were all participating for the first time in the two day competition played at Columbia’s Forest Lake Club. Out of a possible 7 points, the four first timers won 6 points. The bright spot for the professional team was created by the two Senior players Tommy Pendley and John Winterhalter who won all their points.
The first round alternate shot competition found both teams finishing with four and one half points. The second round had18 singles matches with a possible 18 points. The amateurs won their first three matches and went on to win 12 points for the day.
This year marked the 28th Annual grudge matches between the 18 best amateurs and a comparable team of the state’s best club professionals. The victory was the sixth straight for the amateurs and evened the series at 13 wins for each group with one tie and one event being rained out.
