78th Amateur Championship
Anderson Dominates
With a final round of two under par 70 and a four day total of 272, Mark Anderson is the 2009 SCGA Amateur Champion. Anderson used a solid putting game and some timely shots to claim the Championship by a six shot margin on the South Course at Berkeley Hall Plantation.
The victory didn’t come as easily as some may have thought when the 23 year old started the day with a four shot lead. After making par on the first three holes a pulled tee shot on the 4th hole and a rare missed short putt on the par three 5th hole led to consecutive bogies. Meanwhile Gaffney’s Josh Gallman made birdies on both holes and very quickly the four shot cushion was gone. Unfazed, Anderson came right back with a birdie on the par five 6th hole and Gallman stumbled with a bogey to fall back two shots. That was as close as anyone got to the hopeful Walker Cup participant as Anderson went on to make four more birdies and only one bogey throughout the rest of the round.
At 278 Josh Gallman and Irmo’s Steve Liebler finished tied for 2nd place. This is the second straight Amateur runner up finish for the 20 year old Gallman. North Charleston’s Austin Cody shot a final round of even par for a 4th place finish. Defending Champion, Lee Palms finished tied for 12th at two under par, 286.
The 2009 SCGA Amateur Championship was conducted on the par 72 – 7,042 yard Tom Fazio designed South Course at Berkeley Hall Plantation in Bluffton, SC. The event began with a field of 123 players and was cut to the low 70 and ties following the first two rounds of play. The Amateur Championship is one of 19 Major Championships run by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 78th year of existence. The 2010 Amateur Championship is scheduled for Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, SC.
