Hopkins Takes Title
With a final round of one under par 71 and tournament total of 276, Luke Hopkins is the 2007 SCGA Amateur Champion.
Starting the day with a six shot lead, Hopkins stayed steady making pars on the first five holes. His first birdie of the day came on the 588 yard par five 6th hole. Two more pars and another birdie on the 9th hole had the 20 year old Clemson sophomore at two under for the day and nursing an eight shot lead. The Greer native added another birdie on the par four 10th hole and continued on his par run until hole 15. The Champion’s one hiccup of the day came on the 452 yard par four 15th hole where he made a double bogey. Three pars coming in, including a four on the tough 18th hole, insured Hopkins of the victory.
The victory by Luke Hopkins now means a Clemson University golfer has held the Amateur Championship title 7 out of the last 11 years.
The top twenty from this year’s Championship will be exempt from qualifying in 2008 when the event will be conducted at Musgrove Mill. Twenty one players finished at 293 or better which tied for the elusive 20th spot.
