75th Amateur Championship
Strong Finish Gives Goff Victory
With a final round score of two under par 68 and four day total of 277, Jeffrey Goff has claimed the SCGA’s 75th State Amateur Championship. The Jackson native came from three behind at the start of the day to win by three over Jordan Byrd of Pendleton and Phillip Mollica of Anderson.
Goff made a quick move early in the day making birdie on the par four 2nd hole and the par four 4th to get within one shot of the third round leader, Jordan Byrd. Just as quickly as Goff got close to the lead he fell behind after three straight bogies starting on the 5th hole. A double bogey by Jordan Byrd on the 9th put Goff right back into contention and he jumped at the opportunity to take control. Goff birdied both par five’s, 10 and 14, to take a one shot lead heading into the tough par three 16th hole. A bogey four by Goff and clutch par putt by Byrd left the two tied with two holes to play. Goff refused to fold however, clinching the victory with birdies on the final two holes to claim his first SCGA Championship.
The 2006 SCGA Amateur Championship was played on the par 70 – 6,713 yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, SC. The field consisted of 142 players and was cut to the low 70 and ties after the first two days of play. The Amateur Championship is one of 17 Major Championships run by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 75th year of existence. The 2007 Amateur Championship will be conducted August 2-5 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, SC.
