73RD AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Hamilton Outpaces Field
Alex Hamilton is the 2004 State Amateur Champion after a final round score of even par and a six shot victory over Stephen Poole, Jr. and David Dargan.
The University of South Carolina golfer started the day with a four shot lead and quickly made it five shots with a birdie on the first hole of the day. A string of pars and a birdie from 5 feet on the 458-yard par four 6th hole gave Hamilton a six shot lead after the first nine holes. Another birdie on the 10th hole gave Hamilton his largest lead of the day, 7 shots ahead of Clemson golfer Stephen Poole. Hamiltons big lead shrunk however, after making bogies on holes 11, 14, and 15. With a two-putt par on the 16th and a fabulous up and down out of the bunker on 17 the Aiken resident was back in control after Poole failed to get up and down on the 17th hole for par. Hamilton finished in style making birdie on the 72nd hole to finish the tournament at 282, six under par.
Tied for second at even par 288 were Spartanburg native Stephen Poole and Columbia Country Club member David Dargan. With bogies on the last two holes, Poole finished his final round with a two over par 74. Dargan finished his week strong shooting two under par 34 on the last nine to shoot one under par 71.
Finishing tied for fourth was Columbia resident Thomas Kennedy and Phillip Monica from Anderson with one over pars 289.
147 players started the State Amateur being played over the 7,060-yard newly renovated Columbia Country Club. 76 players made the cut at 156 and the final 36 holes were played over the weekend. The 73rd Annual Amateur Championship is one of 18 major events that the South Carolina Golf Association conducts throughout the year.
