41st Annual Junior Championship
Jones Dominates!
Gregg Jones of Florence posted a final round 71 to win the 41st Annual South Carolina Golf Association Junior Championship. It was his third straight sub par round for a 210 total and a six stroke margin of victory in the 54 hole Championship. This year's event was held at Mid-Carolina Country Club, June 8-10, 1999.
Jones, 17, posted nines of 36 and 35 in the round. The Clemson bound player is only the second player to win in all four age groups. Jones, who did not miss a fairway all day, made three birdies on round. Jack Ferguson, who started the day two strokes back, finished the round where he started, alone in second place. For the rising senior out of Seneca, this was the second straight year he finished in second place.
The top eight finishers overall earned a spot on the SC team in the South Carolina / Georgia Junior Challenge Matches. Juniors 14 and older were competing for those honors. The overall Champion will be invited to play in the SCGA Amateur Championship in August at the Country Club of Charleston.
Dustin Johnson of Columbia claimed the 14-15 bracket with a birdie on the second hole of sudden death. Johnson forced the playoff after a four shot swing on the final hole of regulation when leader Zack Siefert of Simpsonville made a triple bogey seven and Johnson forced the tie with a seven footer for birdie. The thirty six hole leader, Emmett Turner of Greenwood bogeyed the final hole to miss making the playoff by a stroke.
In the 12-13 age group, Warren Thomas of Columbia won by six strokes with a final round 74 for a 230 total.
The field of 180, competing in three age groups (16-17, 14-15, and 12-13) was cut to 63 for the final round. For more information, the SCGA at (803) 732-9311.
