25th Lefty Righty & 30th Lefthanders Championship
Sill and Yex Come Back to Capture Title
Santee, SC - The team of Robert Dargan and Brad Krapfel (Columbia) took a three shot lead into the final round of the SCGA Lefty-Righty Championship. The front nine saw their lead completely evaporate as the “birdie machine” that posted a 12 under par 60 a day earlier made the turn in even par, six stokes higher than their Saturday score.
Stan Sill and Arthur Yex from Spartanburg, the 1999 champions made a run with three birdies on the front. It was enough to catch the Dargan-Krapfel team with nine holes to play. Craig Willis(Columbia) and Steve Liebler(Irmo) moved into contention on the front with a two under par score of 34. Ryan Watford and Daniel Johnson (Lamar) also turned at two under, tied with Willis-Liebler. This left both teams one stroke back with nine holes to play.
Dargan and Krapfel kept firing blanks on the back, as putt after putt continued to miss the hole. An eagle at the final hole by Dargan seemed to be anti-climatic, but it did give them a share of second place at 15 under 129. They tied the team of Watford and Johnson who posted a final round 66. Willis-Liebler could only manage two birdies on the final nine, but finished fourth at 131.
While dargan and Krapfel were "backing up" and the other teams were holding steady, Sill and Yex kicked it into high gear on the back. Sill made birdie on four of the last five holes to move the team to 17 under par and capture the Championship for the second time in three years.
In the Lefthanders’ Championship, which was being contested at the same time, Stan Sill recorded his eleventh victory. With a final round score of 1 under par 71, Sill finished at 6 under par over the 36 holes. He held off Dargan who started one back, but closed with a 74 thanks in part to a final hole eagle. Tim Carter of Florence used a final round of 71 to move to 2 under par and take runner-up honors with Dargan.
In the third flight, the team of Dicky McCarney and Jeff Tindall came back from a first round catastrophe to tie the low score of the day, an 8 under 64. They took first place by ten strokes over Donald Thigpen and Jim Sauls of Bishopville.
