20th Annual Mid-Amateur Championship
Dargan Claims 2001 South Carolina Mid-Am Championship
Columbia, SC – With a final round score of two under par 70 Robert Dargan of Columbia, captured the 2001 South Carolina Golf Association Mid-Am Champion. The championship was conducted for players over the age of 30 at the George Cobb designed 6600 yard. par 72 Spring Valley Country Club.
Dargan, the leader after 36 holes at 137, began the day with a one stroke lead over Gus Sylvan of Columbia and two strokes over Walter Todd of Laurens. By the end of nine holes, Sylvan had forged a tie for the lead with Dargan by making birdie on the par 5 ninth.
Pars at 10 and 11 and birdies at 12 by both players left them tied for the lead with six holes to play. Dargan made bogey at the short par 3, 13th hole to fall one behind as Sylvan made par.
The lead changed hands again at 15 when Dargan made birdie and Sylvan made bogey. A par at 16 by Dargan and another bogey by Sylvan put Dargan two ahead with two to play. Dargan closed with birdies at the final two holes to claim a four stroke victory.
Playing just in front of the final group, Steve Liebler of Irmo was turning up the heat on the back nine. After a lackluster front nine score of three over par, 39, Liebler made a run for the lead with six birdies, including the last four holes for a back side score of 30 (six under par). The effort fell short, but his 69 left him tied for second with Sylvan.
John Dennis of Greenville and Joe Hendrick of Chesterfield finished in joint fourth at three under par 213.
