9th Annual Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championship
DuPre and King Prevail
Kevin King and David DuPre shot a final round score of 63 for a two day total of sixteen under par to win the 2003 South Carolina Golf Association Mid-Am Four Ball. First round co-leaders Michael Gravley and Duff Wagner finished in a tie for second with Steve Liebler and Bubba Hightower at twelve under.
King and DuPre, from Bluffton and Blythewood, got off to a slow start but turned things on after the first two holes. The duo made six straight birdies on holes two through eight, including a chip in birdie from DuPre on the par five 4th hole. Kevin King showed his own magic making par on the par four 9th hole after knocking it in trouble off the tee. The team made the turn at six under par holding a slim lead over playing partners Gravley and Wagner.
On the back nine, Gravley and Wagner made a quick charge with birdies on the 10th and 11th hole to get within one shot. That is as close as anyone got however, as the short par four 12th hole proved to be the deciding factor. With King managing to get up and down from the green side bunker for birdie and Gravley failing to convert, the duo was never seriously challenged again. DuPre and King continued their good play making two more birdies coming in and claiming the 2003 Championship by four shots.
64 teams started the competition playing the 6,768-yard Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie, SC. The 2002 Champions, Jimmy Burgess and Todd White were not eligible to defend their title as White is playing in this year’s US Amateur Championship. The Mid-Am Four Ball is one of 18 Major Championships that the South Carolina Golf Association conducts throughout the year.
